A loft bed is a popular space-saving solution for small children's rooms, lifting the bed up to create play space underneath. Loft beds for toddlers are typically low loft beds, with the mattress set at 3-4 feet off the ground. This allows young kids to climb in and out of bed safely, though i put mine a little higher so that we can eventually store more cars and trucks under it. Loft beds have many benefits for toddlers and their families. They maximize limited floor space in a child's bedroom. The area underneath can be used for playing, storage, or even a work desk later on. Loft beds also allow more fun decorating options, such as using the space below for a playhouse. Toddlers often find loft beds fun and exciting. In this DIY tutorial, we'll walk through the steps to build a sturdy loft bed for a toddler. We'll cover gathering the necessary materials and tools, constructing the frame, adding the platform, including safety rails, and installing finishing touches like paint or stain. Follow along to create a custom loft toddler bed for your little one.

Materials Needed To build a loft bed for a toddler, you will need the following materials:

Wooden boards - You will need enough wooden boards to construct the bed frame, platform, ladder, and safety rails. Standard (4) 1x4 boards used for the slats under the mattress, (20) 2x2 boards to build all of the frame, ladder and rails, (3) 1x6 boards to form the outside of the platform and 1 standard 4x8 sheet of plywood or thick particle board to support the mattress. Pine boards are an affordable option. You can buy ones that are rough but you will do more sanding or you can buy premium boards, although more costly this will save you time when you go to finish it! Make sure to select straight, untreated boards free of large knots.

Screws - You will need wood screws in various sizes, like 1-1/4", 2", and 3". Have an assortment of Phillips-head wood screws on hand. Deck screws work well. -****finishing screws & pocket hole screws

Ladder & saftey rails will be built in*** - Purchase or build a ladder to attach to the frame to allow the toddler to climb up into the bed. Make sure it has wide, flat steps for easy climbing. - Safety rails - You will need wooden boards to construct safety rails around the platform opening and ladder. This prevents the toddler from falling out of the bed. -

Mattress - Choose a toddler mattress that fits nicely atop the platform. Look for one approximately 27.5” x 52” in size. Make sure you have sufficient quantities of these materials before beginning the project. Pre-drill holes whenever screwing into the end grain of boards to prevent splitting.

## Tools Needed To build a loft bed for a toddler, you will need the following essential tools: -

Circular or jig saw - This saw is necessary for precisely cutting the wood to the right dimensions. Make sure to use a fine-toothed blade for a smooth cut. -

Drill - A power drill with a range of drill bits is crucial for drilling pilot holes and driving screws to assemble the frame and attach slats. Bring plenty of spare drill bits. - Sander - An orbital sander will smooth any rough edges on the cut wood pieces. This helps create a safe, splinter-free bed for your toddler. -

Tape measure - Accurately measuring and cutting the wood is key. A quality 25-foot tape measure will be indispensable. -

Level - A four-foot level will help ensure the bed frame is properly squared and level during assembly. A level bed is important for your child's safety. Having these essential tools for the loft bed project will make the job much easier and ensure a stable finished product for your toddler. Be sure to wear safety goggles and a dust mask when using power tools.

## Step 1 -

Cut the Pieces The first step is to cut the pieces for the bed frame to the appropriate size based on the mattress dimensions. You'll need boards for the headboard, footboard, side rails, and slats to support the mattress. Before cutting, measure the length and width of the mattress. Add a few inches to the length and width measurements to allow for overhang. This will give you the dimensions to cut the headboard, footboard, and side rails. Mark the measurements on the boards and cut them to size with a circular saw or miter saw. You may need to make a few angled cuts for the headboard and footboard. Go slowly and carefully follow the lines during the cutting process. For the slats, cut 1x3 or 1x4 boards into pieces that are a few inches shorter than the interior width of the frame. This allows them to fit snugly between the side rails. Space the slats evenly, usually 8-12 inches apart depending on the thickness. Cutting notches in the vertical boards makes it easier to fit the horizontal slats snugly in place during assembly. Measure and mark where each slat will go. Use a circular saw to cut out a notch about 1 inch deep. After cutting all pieces to size, sand them smooth and round over any sharp edges. This prevents splinters and finishes the wood nicely. Now the main frame components are ready for assembly. The properly sized and cut boards will allow you to construct a sturdy loft bed frame tailored to the mattress dimensions.

## Step 2 -

Assemble the Frame To assemble the frame, start by screwing together the side boards and end boards. Using wood screws, attach one side board to each end board, forming a rectangle. Make sure the boards are flush at the corners. It's important that the frame is square, so double check this by measuring the diagonals - they should be equal. If not, gently tweak the frame until the measurements match. Once the frame is square, add screws to reinforce it. Drill pilot holes first to prevent splitting the wood when screwing it together. Space the screws every 12-16 inches along the boards. Having a solid, square frame is crucial for building a sturdy loft bed. Take your time ensuring it is properly assembled at this stage.

## Step 3 -

Add the Platform Cut the plywood sheets to the size you want for the platform. Make sure to leave enough overhang for the mattress. You'll likely need 2-3 sheets of plywood. Position the plywood on top of the frame and use wood screws to screw it into place. Drill pilot holes first to prevent splitting the wood. Space the screws about 12" apart. Make sure the plywood is securely fastened so there is no movement or creaking. You don't want the platform to shift under the weight of the mattress and toddler. Double check that the plywood is flush against the inside edges of the frame so there are no gaps for little fingers to get caught in. Sand the edges of the plywood and corners of the frame to round them off for safety. Consider adding trim pieces along the edges for a finished look. The platform should now be firmly screwed into place and ready for the mattress. Make sure it feels sturdy and does not rock or shift at all when you push on it.

## Step 4 -

Attach the Ladder Now it's time to add the ladder to your loft bed frame. This will allow your toddler to safely climb in and out of the bed. ### Cut ladder side pieces Cut two pieces of wood that will form the sides of the ladder. These should be long enough to reach from the floor to the top platform. Make sure they are wide enough for ladder steps to be securely attached. ### Attach ladder With the ladder side pieces cut, attach them to the bed frame using wood screws. Make sure they are parallel and evenly spaced from the frame. The bottom ends of the ladder side pieces should touch the floor. Attach wooden rungs horizontally between the ladder side pieces to create steps. Space the rungs about 10-12 inches apart for comfortable stepping. Make sure the rungs are securely attached and will not wiggle loose over time. The ladder should be sturdy and allow safe access to the bed without risk of collapsing or loosening. Test it out before your toddler uses it.

## Step 5 -

Add Safety Rails Safety is crucial when building a loft bed for a toddler. At this step, you'll want to cut and attach railings on any open sides of the loft bed frame. This will prevent your toddler from accidentally rolling or falling out of the bed. Cut pieces of wood to the desired length for railings on each side. 1x4 boards work well for basic railings. Make sure to sand the edges smooth so there are no splinters. Attach the railings to the inside of the bed frame using wood screws. Drill pilot holes first before driving in screws so the wood does not split. Space the screws evenly, about 12-16 inches apart. You may want to stain or paint the railings before attaching for a finished look. Make sure any stain or paint is non-toxic and safe for a toddler. The height of the railings is important. Aim for at least 5-6 inches above the mattress. This will keep your toddler safely inside the bed. Double check that all screws and railings are secure. Give them a firm push to test. The railings need to be sturdy enough to withstand a toddler leaning against them. Safety rails provide peace of mind and prevent nighttime falls. They are an essential component of any toddler loft bed. With securely installed railings, you can relax knowing your little one is protected.

## Step 6 -

Add Finishing Touches Once the main structure of the loft bed is built, it's time to add some finishing touches to really make it look nice. Here are some ideas for finishing off your DIY loft bed: ### Sand Pieces Sand any rough edges or corners to smooth them out. Start with a coarse grit sandpaper like 80-100 grit to get rid of bigger imperfections. Then switch to a fine grit sandpaper like 220 grit for a smooth finish. Be sure to sand with the grain of the wood. Wipe off any dust after sanding and do a final inspection for any rough spots. Sand them again until smooth.

### Paint/Stain

You can leave the wood raw, but painting or staining will give it a more polished, professional look. If painting, use a primer first for best adhesion and coverage. For stain, apply a pre-stain wood conditioner first. This will help the stain absorb evenly into the wood. Apply two coats of your chosen paint or stain, lightly sanding with fine grit sandpaper between coats. Allow proper dry time between coats. Add any design details like borders or patterns with paint/stain pens. Consider painting the ladder a contrasting color from the bed frame. Seal the finish with a protective clear coat like polyurethane if desired.

 ### Add Safety Details

Consider adding glow-in-the-dark strips or paint to the ladder and safety rails so they're visible at night. You could also stencil or paint the child's name, favorite characters or designs onto the bed frame to personalize it.

## Conclusion
